How to spot a Test and Trace scam.
As the new Test and Trace service for coronavirus is introduced it’s important to be vigilant when sharing personal information, as fraudsters are using the system as a new route to scam people.
Under the Test and Trace service, those who test positive for COVID-19 will be contacted by the NHS and asked to give information on people they have been in recent contact with. Those people will then be contacted and told to self-isolate to help stop the spread of the virus. However fraudsters, posing as contact tracers from the NHS, are tricking people into handing over personal information such as bank details or making payments for fake or non-existent COVID-19 testing kits.
Please be aware that real track and tracers will NOT ask you to do any of the following:
• Make any form of payment
• Submit bank details
• Submit social media passwords
• Dial a premium rate number
• Access a website that does not belong to GOV.UK
Suspicious activity can be reported to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040 or visiting www.actionfraud.police.uk and more information about the Test and Trace service can be found at www.gov.uk, or call the NHS on 0300 013 5000
If someone contacts you via phone and you do feel unsure, you should ask for an email or text message to be sent inviting you the Test and Trace website, and you can submit information that way. If you are unsure, put the phone down and check with friends and family. Please share this information with friends, family and neighbours.
